Joan Mary FAIRHUST married Philip CHALLIS

Joan is mentioned in a letter written by her mother Chloe SYMONDS to WH Grant  on 9th July 1918 as being 4 years and 3 months of age.

After her brother Geoffrey committed suicide (having been bullied at Sedbergh boarding school, he was found by Joan and their mother Chloe in the Barrowford Vicarage on the last day of the school holidays). Joan’s daughter-in-law, Alison Challis writes:

Joan was a teacher then became a nurse and a midwife in the East End of London during the war. …..Joan met Philip an East end boy and a youth worker…..  Joan’s life and Philip’s was dedicated to public service and keeping busy…., they were both practicing Christians. I loved Joan and Philip…… (Source Alison Challis, wife of Joan’s son, Dr Andrew Luke Challis via email to Julia Brinkmann 9 January 2017)
