Chloe Mary SYMONDS b: 25 Sep 1873 in Woolston, Hampshire, England, d: Dec 1955 in Hastings, Sussex, England.

She married Frank Warburton FAIRHURST who was from an Ecclesiastical family in Lancashire.

Her grandson’s wife, Alison Challis nee Gilbert said that Chloe was of slight build. Alison and her husband Andrew named their daughter after Chloe.

Chloe had much tragedy in her life.  W.H Grant Jr. made mention in a letter he wrote to his father in March 1918 that Chloe had 3 children, referring to the youngest boy Geoffrey (then 2),  as being “just Chloe all over again”. He mentioned that although Chloe was well, she was saddened by the death of “Jim”.

He also mentioned in his letter that Chloe’s husband had taken on the role of Bookkeeper during the war years for the mill, but also performed his duty as Vicar to the Barrowford Parish.

Chloe’s second son Geoffrey tragically died at the age of 14, He was multi-talented and handsome, winning a scholarship to Sedburgh.

Chloe gave birth to all her children in her 40’s.Chloe wrote to W.H Grant in July 1918 stating that her eldest son, John, was “backward”. John had Down Syndrome and Chloe cared for John up until his death at the age of 30. (Source Alison Challis)
