Leslie James (Jack) Grant was born on 5 November 1886 at Balmain NSW, the first child of William Henry Grant and Frances Ann Grant (nee Hammerton).  Actually, Jack was William Henry’s ninth child and Frances Ann’s third.  Frances Ann already had two children, Rhoda and Frank, by her former marriage to James Thomas Grant (no relation to William Henry).

During 1887 the family moved to Boambee near Coffs Harbour. In 1909, William Henry took the position of Shire Engineer at Barraba, then in 1911 Shire Engineer at Carrathool, then in 1912 Shire Engineer at Stroud, before finally in 1918 Roads Engineer at Coffs Harbour (Dorrigo Shire). It is assumed Jack moved with the family on each occasion, except the last move to Coffs Harbour.

In December 1914 Jack was appointed briefly Acting Shire Clerk at Stroud Council and again, during April-May 1915.  From February to August 1919, Jack was appointed Acting Shire Engineer at Stroud Council.

Jack married widow Nellie Agnes Gray (nee O’Keefe) on 18 April 1925 at Kogarah NSW.  Nellie already had two children from her former marriage to John T Gray – Keith Stuart Gray born 6 December 1912 and Laurence Ainsley Gray born 22 November 1914, both at Stroud. John Gray died at Hunters Hill NSW in 1921.

The 1930 electoral roll shows Jack and Nellie living at Bellingen with Jack’s occupation as mill manager. The 1936 electoral roll shows the family living at Hyde Street, Bellingen with Jack’s occupation as draftsman. The 1937 electoral roll shows the family still living at Bellingen.

The 1943 electoral roll has Jack and Nellie living at 28 Melville Street, Ashbury (a suburb of Sydney) with Jack’s occupation as draftsman.  Both the 1949 and 1954 electoral rolls show Jack and Nellie still living at Ashbury. After Jack’s death in 1955, Nellie is shown on the 1958 and 1968 electoral rolls still living at Ashbury NSW.

Jack died on 30 March 1955 at Ashfield NSW and is buried at Sutherland Cemetery.  Nellie died some time after 1968.
