Alison GILBERT as written in an email to Julia Brinkmann 9 January 2017:

We live in North Yorkshire and are culturally English. However I was born  and brought up in Solihull. I was a nurse and Andy (Andrew CHALLIS) is a Doctor. We came to North Yorkshire for a job. We have brought our children up here etc. However my father was 3rd generation Australian born in 1908 in Melbourne. Edward Melbourne Gilbert. His father a civil servant was born in Sydney and his mother was born in Adelaide. My grandfather’s parents Gilbert/Brookes were mariners and captained ships from Rotherhithe (the hulks) to Australia. My grandmother’s father was Charles Trappold a miner from Stuttgart, Germany who came in the gold rush. Mary Genevieve’s mother was Annie O’Malley from Limerick Ireland whose parents had set up a hotel/pub in Ned Kelly country! My grandfather was Robert Leslie Gilbert. So much history there! My mother is Patricia Anne Gilbert b 1929 now Venvil re married after my father died in 1972. Widowed since 1988. My mother’s maiden name is Fagan, Anglo Irish and her mother was Florence Cheetham, a Lancastrian.

The Grants owned the  Adelphi Estate in St Vincent and had 162 slaves. I think the French and the Scottish had estates. We have to put this into the context of the time however.

Also my cousin Stephen Gilbert now a retired Brigadier and his brother Edward Gilbert Bishop Hugh of Aberdeen RC are also Clan Grant but a different yet also a  prestigious  branch, their mother bearing an uncanny resemblance to Joan! This is via their maternal family. I have never been to Australia but my son has and was treated royally by his Great Great Uncle’s, (Joseph Trappold) (Great Aussie rules footballer amateur in Albury Wodonga)  business partner’s descendents. He was working with the New Zealand army at the time.  My daughter is on holiday (very modestly) with friends in Barbados, with strict instructions not to breathe the name Grant as Castle Grant is on that Island!
