Joan met Philip an East end boy and a youth worker, much to Chloe’s (Chloe SYMONDS was Joan’s mother) displeasure and I think she was able to nurture him and that filled a gap left by Geoffrey (Geoffrey was Joan’s brother who hanged himself at the age of 14 a day before returning to Sedburgh boarding school. Joan had helped Chloe get Geoffrey down). When she had Andy it gave her another reason to keep going but Joan’s life and Philip’s was dedicated to public service and keeping busy as a form of displacement and belief, they were both practicing Christians. I loved Joan and Philip but as she became deaf quite early and suffered as a result from an ongoing monologue which could reduce me to tears it was not so easy.
